Whenever I talk about healing BPD, someone always jumps in the comments to say: “Wait, Dr. Jen, the science says personality disorders can’t be cured!” And strictly speaking, from a medical textbook perspective? They’re right. But if you stop there, you’re missing the most hopeful part of the entire story.
Here’s the clinical reality: We don’t use the word cure because the current, prevailing science tells us that your biological sensitivity—your Neural Hardware—is part of your DNA. The 2025 genomic data shows that if you have BPD, your brain is wired to be more porous to emotions. We can’t delete that sensitivity any more than we can change your eye color. That’s why scientists prefer the terms Diagnostic Remission or Recovery.
But here is the data point that changes everything: BPD actually has higher and more stable remission rates than many disorders we consider curable. As we’ve discussed, landmark longitudinal studies show that upwards of 90% of people with BPD reach remission. But even more importantly? Once you hit that baseline shift, you are actually less likely to relapse than someone with Major Depression or Social Anxiety. While a depression spike can hit anyone at any time, once you build the Internal CEO tools to manage a sensitive nervous system, those skills stay with you for life. You don’t just get better—you become biologically resilient.
I like to think of it as a Manual Override. As I describe in Phase IV of my INNER Protocol, we aren’t trying to make you normal or numb. We’re teaching you how to drive a high-performance engine. A cure implies you stop feeling. Recovery means you still feel everything deeply, but those feelings no longer have the power to destroy your life, your relationships or your peace of mind.
So, no—we don’t “cure” your sensitivity. We master it. We move you from Diagnostic Remission (where you check the boxes) to Psychosocial Recovery (where you actually enjoy your life). You stop being a patient managing a disorder and start being an executive mastering a superpower.
You don’t need a cure for who you are; you just need a manual for how you work. If I can help you with BPD symptoms, please reach out to start a conversation about options or take a free look at my TikTok BPD skills group for 7 days over at @shrink.think.
